Firstly you'll need to buy some paraffin wax from your local craft shop or from a specialised candlemaking supplier. Wax is available in block, pellet or granule form. It is advisable to get fully refined candle making wax instead of semi refined because it is alot cleaner and is a better quality candle making wax.
Let's start melting some wax. If you have blocks of wax you can easily break them into smaller pieces using a hammer. Place the wax into your pot, kettle or double boiler and place it on a electric or gas stove. If you're or planning to get serious about candle making then you can get a professional candle wax melter. If you do have stearin, then melt that first and use roughly 10% stearin to wax.
Slowly start melting the wax by turning the heat to medium. As soon as all your wax has melted use a candle making thermometer and hold the bottom end in the wax for about a minute or so to take a reading. Continue heating the wax untill it reaches 90 degrees celcius.
Remove the pot from the heat or switch the stove off!
