Candle making instruction-How to make a moulded candle-step 5,6,7&8.

Step 5

It is time to check the temperature of the molten wax. If it is between 85 and 90 degrees celcius then it is ready to be poured, but if not then you need to reheat it to that temperature.

Step 6

Use a small camping kettle to slowly pour the molten wax into the mould untill it is about 1cm from the top. Leave it for about 2 minutes and then lightly tap on the side of the mould with a knife to loosen any bubbles that might have accumulated on the inside wall of the mould.

Step 7

After about 1hr you will notice that a skin has formed, you must open a small hole in the skin as close as possible to the wick, because this is the area where the wax is still at its softest. This is done to prevent a airtight cavity from forming on the inside of the candle.

Once you have done that, reheat the wax to the original pouring temperutare and top up the candle. You have to repeat this step untill the wax is hard to the touch and pulls away from the walls of the mould.

Step 8

Once the wax is hard it would have pulled away from the mould due to shrinkage. Now use a craft knife to cut the wick by pushing the tip into the wax, just next to the wick, but do this at an angle untill the blade ends up cutting the wick below the wax surface line. This is done so that the end of the wick will not interfere when you level the bottom of the candle. If a piece of wax breaks off during this excersize, then simply pour a little molten wax into the small cavity.
